Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport — South Parallel Taxiway Optical Assistance System

During the Phase III expansion of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, the second control tower was positioned to the north of Terminal 3 (T3). Due to the height and structure of the newly built T3 terminal, the tower experiences a 720-meter line-of-sight blind zone toward the south parallel taxiway, as well as two additional blind zones (each approximately 490 m long and 16 m wide) on the east and west parallel taxiways.

These taxiways fall within the tower control area and are critical operational zones within the airport movement area. To address these visibility limitations, a technical solution was implemented to restore visual coverage of obstructed areasthrough digital and optical means, ensuring full situational awareness prior to the commissioning of the East Airfield expansion.

System Deployment & Capabilities

By deploying visible-light panoramic cameras, infrared panoramic cameras, and tracking PTZ units at four key locations (P1, P2, P3, and P4), the system achieves full coverage of the south parallel taxiway and both east–west taxiways.

The solution not only eliminates visual blind spots but also integrates with tower automation systems, enabling AI-based visual conflict detection across all monitored taxiway areas.

Operational Integration & Value

All alarm data and video feeds are transmitted in real time to the tower automation system, achieving deep integration between traditional tower control and video-assisted control operations.

This significantly improves conventional control workflows:

Overall, the system transforms tower operations from data-centric management to integrated, visualized control, improving both safety and efficiency in complex airport environments.
